Since my last post I’ve raced three weekends–two criteriums, two road races and one 20k time trial. Somewhere in between on a Saturday group ride a Pima County Sheriff’s deputy played a little game of “chicken” with a group of cyclists traveling downhill at 35 mph. The riders at the front of the group reacted to the oncoming vehicle in their lane with some heavy breaking, followed almost immediately by some heavy crashing a little ways back. I recall seeing the deputy’s emergency lights straight ahead, then the riders in front of me crashed, and I hit them and wound up in the dirt shoulder while my bike remained in the road and took quite a beating from the 3 or 4 riders that plowed into it at high speeds. The truly amazing thing is that no one was seriously injured. Just remember:always wear gloves. A paramedic at the scene spent a few minutes tweezing rocks out of my hands and fingers–I should have wore gloves that morning.

The following weekend the University of Arizona Cycling team absolutely dominated the Southwest Collegiate Cycling Conference road championships in Hillsboro, New Mexico (we must have scared all the other teams away). The race provided a great opportunity for the ladies team to try out some maneuvers in preparation for Collegiate road nationals. My teammates for the event will be Melanie Meyers, Kathy Rakel, and Judy Jenkins.

Fast forward through three or four exams, a paper, a incredibly stressful group project and suddenly its spring break. I’m still wondering when winter’s coming around and it’s already ninety degrees out. Please see Melanie’s update on the UA Criterium. And I won my first cat 1-2-3 road race and the UA Crit/Tumacocorri Omnium–sweet. Now maybe I can get a road cat upgrade this year…
